Nice one!

It the second time, that you are mentioning that Oura. I already thought about it the first time, now I consider to buy one. Do you have any discount codes, or is it not like paid product placement, but your true recommendation?

Chris Z's avatar

Ha! I am surprised that I am so convincing when I talk about gadgets, but this was definitely not an advertisement. Neither a paid one, nor a free one. I also marked it in the Das Z Letter, maybe I should have done this more obvious. With that being said, I unfortunately don't have a discount code. I do remember, however, that Oura had a nice promotion going on during last year's Black Friday, which is by the end of November. You might wanna keep an eye on that, if you really want to buy an Oura Ring. Once again, this is no advertising ;-)

I did not really believe that it has been an advertisement, because I considered you as independent ;-) So it is a true recommendation? I am often with sleep and stress, but my Garmin fenix 7 is probably not exact in measuring these

So here's the thing: From what I've heard the sleep tracking of Garmin watches has improved a lot lately. Also, the already mentioned Whoop wrist band seems to work properly. The reason why I still prefer the Oura ring is the sheer size. It's a tiny gadget that you don't even realize wearing it. Especially at night I cannot imagine wearing a watch or a wristband.

I am also not sure to get another tracking device especially outside the Garmin universe. I mainly use Garmin Connect for gathering all data and training plans. If I had the oura I would have to switch to apple health or sth other. So according to your hint on improved sleep data it does not make sense to get the ring, does it? I don’t mind to wear my Garmin watch night and day. I also use a Garmin edge, Garmin index s2 and a Garmin Heart rate belt. It would also be hard to tell my wife that I „need“ such a ring;-)

If you're comfortable wearing your garmin watch at night I'd say this is equally useful as a sleep tracker as the Oura ring! And if we're honest, we don't "need" any of these gadgets ;-)

„ For me, the cover stands for the two hearts beating in my chest. The punk and the levelhead. I explain these two character traits of mine in great detail in RUNHUNDRED, so I will cut it short: The punk is drawn to the unknown, to chaos, excitement, and exploration of the new. The levelhead is in constant search for order, predictability, the familiar, and safety.“

That sounds very familiar to me. It is also often that my chaotic, excited, exploring heart collides with my need for structure and predictability.

Especially that aspect makes me looking forward to your book.

It is the greatest thing to hear that other runners can relate to my tiny running world. The punk vs. the levelhead is kind of the leitmotiv in the book. In my whole life, for that matter, haha!

It even gave me some kind of „aha“ when I read your Z Letter today, because I have never seen it expressed so clearly, so it might help me a lot :-)

Huge congratulations, Chris. I agree with the comments here, the light cover looks surprising and that's a positive surprise! Looking forward to the beginning of the pre-order.

First thought: "why did he put a track on the cover?", but I guess that's just me being drawn to the doom loop.

I love the cover, in particular (as has been said before) because it is light and colorful. Much more than that I can't wait to read the whole story.

On the Oura thing, I'm in Whoop land for better or worse, and it sometimes tells me that I have reached my optimal day's strain after breakfast (before training), so there's that.

The Doom Loop <3 Yes, that's the levelhead inside of me, who is drawn to the track, while the punk seeks the adventure in the mountains. Story of my life. And also story of my book ;-) Whoop, Oura....different device, same results.

I’m loving the cover, maybe mostly because it’s so light. I kinda expected something with a darker colour scheme. Am really looking forward reading this, in particular because imho you have not only progressed tremendously as a runner, but also as a writer.

Awesome cover!

And what I like most about my Oura and its app: when it is clearly not useful. Like recommending to take a walk while you‘re in a car. Or telling me that I will have a great day as I‘m fully rested, but I spent the day in bed because I‘m sick... it always cracks me up. :)

Thanks! And regarding Oura, I know exactly what you mean. Some of its "suggestions" are just terribly out of place. I particularly hate it when I wake up in the morning nice and fresh, ready for anything, and the app tells me that I had a terrible sleep and asks me to take a break from life haha! Hardly anyone knows this as well as you: Technology will only get you so far...

Same here, but it happens only once in a while. In the end, it's good when you can also rely on your bodily sensations and to know what to do, when you're feeling fine or not so well after getting up.
