Got the same diagnosis 8 weeks prior ZUT last year, run/hiked it without pain though. Biggest learning: minimal running shoes don‘t allow shitty landings, helped me a lot to get back into running (clunky shoes lack proprioception and make it worse after a run). Plus strengthening the glutes (her lunges with weight) helped at lot for building a muscle armour. Right now I only feel a little pinch when doing cross-legged sitting for along time - it is hard getting old, the shock absorbers are wearing out.

All the best Chris, 100% sure you be running again soon! 🤟🏻

I'll echo the minimal shoes part. I switched to Vibram 5-fingers for my ACL recovery, and have stayed minimal, low- or zero-drop, high ground feel every since.

Alright, shoes. I have noted it.

Hey Christian! Thanks for your message. I cannot imagine hiking/running ZUT next weekend but I'm only 2 weeks into my injury ;-) Thanks for sharing your story, this truly helps me a lot. Right now the count "horror stories" vs. "success stories" is 1:2, so keep em coming ;-) Do I understand you correctly that you also treated your meniscus injury conservatively? Also thanks for the tipp with the shoes. I have similar feelings and always felt the best when running in flat "no bullshit" shoes, even on the road.

The skateboarder in me treated it with ice and voltaren, apparently an inner ligament was also torn (knew the pain and feel from back in the days). Could only get an appointment at the orthopaedic 8 weeks later so treated it conservative… went to my favorite physio, she gave me a ton of exercises for core stability and glute buildup, ortho later threw me out because I had run a marathon with these and his advice was to stop sitting cross-legged if that was my only problem…. Hahaha, prescribed orthotics, can‘t use them in my running sandals. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Haha what a wild story, I love it! <3 Especiall they part: "If sitting cross-legged is your only problem, then just stop sitting cross-legged" haha. Thanks for sharing this!

Sorry to hear this.

When I was 46, at the peak of training for my first ultra and feeling fitter than ever before, I snapped my ACL while playing soccer with my son. The ligament was completely severed, and the doctors said surgery was required. I opted out of that and rehabbed it instead, and I was a stronger runner after than before. Your injury is different, so this might not apply, but I continued to run through my recovery (I was already a few years into a streak of running at least one 10-miler every week, and I kept that streak). (I wrote about it here: https://www.rushofitall.com/posts/rehab-without-acl-surgery).

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with biking, and it sounds like you have a good plan. But also, just because they say you shouldn't run doesn't necessarily mean that you can't run (and over and over, I find that running fixes things). Good luck.

Jeff! Thanks for posting this. I read the article and love your story. My orthopedist gained my trust when he neither said "It will be 8-10 months before you run again" nor "your injury requires surgery". What he said was ""We will get you back on track". I also believe that running itself can be a part of the therapy, even if it hurts a bit. Right now I wouldn't dare to, though. I see this comeback from injury as a multi-phase model. At the moment I'm in phase 1, which is called “Let the body heal”. But I've already got an appointment with the physiotherapist next week and will start doing strengthening and stabilization exercises. Phase 2 ;-)

My wife fell, an X-ray show complete tear of inner meniscus. She went to Ortho who said she needed shots and eventually surgery. She said no to this. Her doc sent her to a arthritis specialist since the X-ray showed some arthritis. My wife is 61. The arthritis specialist said absolutely does not need surgery. Needs the correct physical therapy. She went to PT who everyone says is a miracle worker, and guess what, she has been running lately. He said absolutely do not need surgery. She is going to this PT now for several years. Even now paying out of pocket to see him twice a week to make sure she does all her exercises. It's a matter of finding the right people to help you get back to where you need to be!

Rick, thank you so much for sharing this! Absolutely wonderful and so good to hear your wife didn't trust the first and only one opinion. A lot of docs prescribe surgery much too quickly. I'm glad my orthopedist also pleaded for a conservative therapy first. Speaking of physio: Last year when I had another injury and my prescribed physio sessions ran out, I also started paying a very good physiotherapist out of my own pocket. Never regrettet one single Euro she got from me. She did a great job and I took the sessions (and exercises) very seriously because I paid for them haha! ;-) Either way, so good to hear your wife is running! Tell her I said 'hi' ;-)

Tip for cycling Bavaria:

Von Bad Reichenhall bis Burghausen. Viele schöne Marktplätze um Kaffeepause zu machen. Freilassing, Laufen, Tittmoning, Burghausen, Traunstein. Waginger und Tachinger See lohnen auch für kurze Schwimmstopps.
