Seems like a perfect target for a return to running — go big or stay home!
Also, you have me intrigued by this race… I’m curious about the general feel of the trails — technicality, exposure, etc. (as compared to UTMB trails, for example). I’ve explored around Garmisch a little bit, and also the mountains south of Oberjoch (around Hintersein), but it was a long time ago, and before I was a trailrunner…. If I miss the Hardrock lottery yet again, a trip back to Germany might be in order. Do you have a sense of how fast it sells out (especially the 100k and 100-mi events) i.e. how soon I’d need to decide?
Blitz-answer to your comment because the race is selling out very fast indeed ;-) 100k is already sold out, there's some spots left for the 100 mi. Trails are comparable to UTMB, everything is very doable as long as the weather is good. Aid stations are plenty and well equipped, markings are ace, vibes are great... ZUT rules. It's a WSER qualifier, too (both the 100k and the 100mi). Well well... visiting Germany in 2025? ;-)
Ahhh - it sounds perfect. Can't act until after the lottery on 7 Dec though (I have 64 tickets for Hardrock this year, so maybe as much as a 25% of getting picked this time). Anyway, just watched the video you linked in the post, and I'm sold - if not 2025, then 2026, I think. Thanks!
Kind of late, but I could relate to so much of what you have written.
In the beginning of 2019 I was living in Munich and realised a pull from the mountains. One with no rush but a kind of clarity that it will happen at some point. Late 2019 I moved to Tegernsee. I found something that just felt right.
Now after years here I grew out of the place. I'm longing for rougher mountains. More community. A bit more city like feeling. Being able to join the noise if I want to. If that makes sense.
This week we got a new flat in Garmisch. We will move there early next year. There was also no rush. We were looking for 1.5 years. (also a tiny spoiler to todays newsletter :D)
I can just say that I was having a hard time back then to actually do it but a friend gave me good advice.
"In the end if you don't like it you can always go back".
And he was right. If I would not have tried it I would not have spend the past years surrounded by an environment that I absolutely loved.
Hope you might also join us in Garmisch in the future ;) Would be nice!
🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 See you at the start-line!
Awesome! 🙏🏼

Great read and great podcast! Signed up for the Garmisch-Trail last wednesday 🥳
Thank you so much, Philip! And awesome to hear you're also gonna be at ZUT! Let's make sure to connect there.
I would love to! 😍
