Extra Challenges
Since I was already making references to a last minute setback for me and my crew, here’s some straight talking real quick. My wife and crew captain Lisa unexpectedly tested positive for covid, which turned our plannings and final preparations for Western States pretty much upside down. Fortunately we are staying in a big house and could easily isolate her from the rest of us with her own bedroom and bathroom, but of course this whole situation triggers a lot of concerns among all of us.
For the past few days the rest of the crew has been testing negative and no one has any symptoms whatsoever. If this doesn’t change until tonight, it’s pretty safe to say, that we didn’t get infected as well. Lisa is also doing better every day. If you’ve been following my journey to Western States you already know, that I also got covid in April and it was terrible. In fact I have never been this sick in my entire life. The idea that Lisa had to go through the same agony really breaks my heart and I am more than glad that she’s pretty much over the hump.
Alongside the emotional stress that this tragic episode causes, it also brings about a number of organizational challenges. Lisa makes up an essential part of my crew. No one knows me better than her, both as a human being and runner. Also she’s my haven of peace and greatest source of energy, when I need it the most. The thought of possibly not meeting her at the aid stations and the finish line, saddens me a lot.
Well, over here it’s Wednesday morning. The race on Saturday. Too early to meet trouble halfway. I just wanted to share the status quo with you all and hopefully generate some positive vibes for Lisa’s recovery. Let’s hope for the best!
